Jamaican Hard Dough Bread Ingredients

With very few ingredients, you can make this recipe-

All-Purpose Flour (1 pound)

The main ingredient to make the Jamaican sweet bread recipe is flour. Take all-purpose flour of 1 pound. This amount is only to make one piece of bread. If you want to make two, double the ingredients.

Sugar (2 Tsp)

To get a slightly sweet flavour, add 2 tsp of sugar. But not more than 2 tsp.

Salt (1 Tsp)

Adding 1 tsp of salt to the batter will also give a salty flavour. It means, your bread will get a combined sweet and salty flavour.

Dry Yeast (1 Tsp)

To ferment the sugar you use in the bread recipe, add yeast. The use of instant dry yeast will ferment the sugar and will build carbon dioxide. And this process will result in rising the bread dough perfectly. So, take 1 tsp of yeast.

Unsalted Butter (1 oz)

Adding unsalted butter will give a higher rise and crisper crust. Also, butter helps to make the bread soft. So, take 1 oz of unsalted and cold butter.

Cold Water ( 1 ¼ Cups)

You never should try making bread dough with hot water. You must add refrigerated cold water. Here, you’ll need 1 ¼ cups of cold water.

How to Make Jamaican Hard Dough Bread Recipe?

Making this bread item will take a bit longer time compared to other regular recipes. Follow the given steps below to make your favoured Jamaican bread with ease-

Step-1

To start off, take a saucepan and boil the milk on low heat. Let’s not make the milk too hot. Just let it slightly warm.

Step-2

Now take a jar and add yeast, sugar, and water. And, mix them well. Once the milk is warmed slightly, add the milk to the mixture of yeast and stir to combine. Ensure the milk isn’t excessively hot. It will spoil the functionality of yeast. Mix all these elements together and set the jar aside to let the yeast start functioning.

Step-3

Next, you need to go for making the batter. So, take a bowl and put flour. Now add salt and butter and keep mixing them all together.  Now add the yeast into that flour mixture and keep mixing them together.

If the batter requires more liquid, add a little water accordingly. The more you knead the batter, the better it will be. Kneading for 10 to 15 minutes constantly will give it a smooth texture.

Step-4

Now if the dough is ready, take another bowl and brush the bowl with little cooking oil. Place the dough in the bowl and rub little cooking oil over the dough. Cover it with wrapping paper or a small towel and keep it aside for at least 1 hour.

Step-5

After an hour, you’ll see the dough is raised and become double in size. It means your dough is ready to roll out. Now sprinkle some dry flour on the surface where you want to roll the dough. Sprinkling flour on the surface will help the dough not to stick to the surface and the rolling stick.

Step-6

Roll out the dough as same as in the picture given below. But don’t make it too thin and ensure the rolled dough is 2cm thick.

Step-8

When the dough is raised well, place the baking tin into your oven and bake at 375° F. Let this caribbean bread dough bake for 30 minutes.

Step-9

Remove from the oven when the outer surface of the dough becomes golden brown. Let it cool for 5 minutes.

Step-10

Now cut into pieces and serve with your preferred side dish.
