Now, you can always use fresh shrimp and crabs for making our rice. But we will be using frozen ones from nearby grocery stores. Of course, you have to spend a good amount of time getting the meat from the crab. 

Yes, the crab meat is the twist for our shrimp and dirty rice. For the seasoning, we will use Zatarain spice mix, and it will get the dirty rice color easily. You can use any homemade spice mix for our dirty rice recipe. However, Zatarain always focuses on New Orleans cuisines. So, if you want to get a taste of the south, we recommend you stick with the Zatarain spice blend. 

And we need a skillet to make our dirty rice. You need at least 1 hours or less to prepare all the ingredients. However, you can get prepared or cooked crabs from the market. So, without any further ado, let’s have a look at the preparation process. 

How to Prepare the Crabs, Shrimp and Dirty rice?

For our dirty rice, we need 7 ingredients for the rice. First, you have to clean and cook the frozen crab and shrimp. However, you can buy cooked frozen shrimp and crabs from the local stores. That will make preparation a lot easier. 

While working with fresh ingredients, you have to cook them. After cooking the shrimp and crab, you have to peel the shells. Of course, you have to chop the crab meat so that the rice doesn’t stay chunky. 

Another way to prepare the ingredients is to shred the crab and shrimp. But we like to keep the shrimps solid. On the other hand, there are plenty of ways you can prepare crab meat. We leave that choice to you. 

Once we are done preparing the meat, we can start cooking. Well, we don’t have to prepare rice separately. Because, the rice mix comes with long grain parboiled rice grains. So, no need to buy rice separately for the recipe.

Ingredients We Need for Our Dirty Rice:

Butter: We will be using 1 tablespoon of butter for our dirty rice recipe. You can use vegetable oil or even olive oil but we like butter as it will give plenty of flavors. 

Green Bell Pepper: Roughly chop and prepare 1/4 cup green bell pepper. The green pepper will add a sweet flavor to the dirty rice. 

Red Bell Pepper: Alongside green bell peppers, you have to chop up 1/4 cup of red bell pepper. 

Zatarain Dirty Rice Mix: Get yourself the original 7 ounces package of rice mix package. 

Shrimp: Peel 1 lb shrimp and clean them properly. 

Crab Meat: You can use frozen crab for the meat. We need 1/2 lb crab meat for the dirty rice. 

Green Onion: Slice 1/4 cup green onion so that the rice doesn’t stay mushy. 

Step by Step Instructions for Making our Shrimp Dirty Rice

Step 1: Use a large skillet to melt butter on medium heat. 

Step 2: Throw in the bell peppers and start stirring them. Cook the bell peppers for 3 minutes until the peppers are tender. 

Step 3: Now, add 1 cup of water and bring it to a boil. 

Step 4: Then, stir in the Zatarain Dirty rice mix and return it to a boil. 

Step 5: You have to reduce the heat to low and cover the large skillet. Let it simmer for 20 minutes. 

Step 6: After 20 minutes, add in the shrimp, crab meat and green onions. Stir the ingredients occasionally. 

Step 7: Cook until the shrimp turns pink and the rice is tender. 
Step 8: Finally. remove it from the stove and let it stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Butter
  • 1/4 Cup Green Bell Pepper
  • 1/4 Cup Red Bell Pepper
  • 7 Oz Zatarain Dirty Rice Mix Package
  • 1 lb Shrimp
  • 1/2 lb Crab Meat
  • 1/4 Cup Green Onion

Instructions

  • Use a large skillet on medium heat to melt butter
  • Stir bell peppers on the butter for 3 minutes until it's tender.
  • Add 1 cup of water in the skillet and bring it to a boil
  • Stir in the Zatarain rice mix and bring it to a boil again
  • Reduce the heat to a low and cover the skillet. Let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Then add in the shrimp, crab meat, and green onions.
  • When the rice is tender and the shrimp pink, remove it from the heat.
  • Remove the rice from the stove and let it stand for 5 minutes.
