Catfish (2 Pounds)

We’ll make the recipe for 5 servings. So, we’ll take 2 pounds of freshly caught catfish. Clean them and remove the upper skin. Cut them into thin fillets. Fillets’ size with 1 ½ inch strips is perfect for catfish po boy.   

Vegetable Oil (1 Cup)

Frying the fillets into deep oil will give a nice crispy texture. At this point,  you’ll need 1 cup of vegetable oil.

Plain Flour (2 Cups)

To make the dry batter, 2 cups of plain flour will be an absolute amount. Take 1 ½ cups of flour if you want to make the batter thin. But we’ll take 2 cups for today’s recipe.

Cornmeal (½ Cup)

There’s no specific choice whether to take yellow or white cornmeal. Taking yellow cornmeal will bring an attractive color to your dish. So, you’ll need ½ cup of yellow cornmeal. 

Cajun Seasoning & Water (2 Tbsp)

Take 2 tbsp of cajun seasoning to season the fish. Besides, you’ll need 2 tbsp of water. 

Eggs (2)

You’ll also need to take 2 large-size eggs. 

Salt (1 Tbsp)

1 tbsp of salt will bring a mild taste. However, salt can be more or less, depending on your preference.  Try taking kosher salt for an ideal seasoning. 

Tomatoes (3)

You’ll need 3 beefsteak tomatoes of large size. Wash the tomatoes and cut them into thick slices with ¼ inch size. Get the shape of tomatoes crosswise. 

Toasted Bread 

Regular or French bread, you’ll need 10 pieces. Ensure the bread are 6 inches in length. If not, cut them into 6-inch lengths.

Large Size Shallot/ Onion (1)

No specific requirement is there on whether or not you have to use shallot. If you want a strong heat in your catfish po boy recipe, go for an onion. However, to get a sweet and delicate flavor, use shallot. So, take what you prefer and chop it into thick ⅛ inch slices. 

Shredded Lettuce (3 Ounces)

Adding lettuce to the catfish po will enhance the flavor. So, you can add 3 ounces of this ingredient to your recipe.

Chili Flacks (2 Tsp)

2 tsp of chili flacks will increase the taste of your catfish po boy dish. However, it’s optional. 

How to Make Catfish Po Boy?

The way you can cook this delicious recipe is as follows-

Step-1

Take a large mixing bowl and season your fish fillets with kosher salt. No need to add any other spices to season the fillets. Now keep the bowl aside. 

Step-2

Take another bowl and add flour, cajun seasoning, and cornmeal. Now mix them all together.  Once the mixture is ready, take a small bowl and take eggs. Add water to it and mix well. 

Step-3

Put a frypan on the stove at medium-high heat. Fill the pan with oil and let it warm

Step-4

Dip the fish fillets into the egg mixture, then dip them into the flour mixture. Now put the fillets in the pan and fry for 5 minutes. Don’t forget to flip up the fillets halfway. Since the fillets are many, fry them in batches. Batch frying will be easier. 

Step-5

Once the fillets look golden brown, transfer them to a plate. Before that, spread a paper towel on the plate. It will help to absorb the oil from fillets. 

Step-6 

You’re nearly done with the recipe. Just take your 6-inch bread pieces and spread chili flacks on them. Take 2 pieces at a time and put lettuce, tomato slices, shallot slices, and 100g of catfish fillets into the bread like a sandwich. Top them with tomato sauce and serve.
